Jim Carrey Reconciles the Opposites of Being & Non-Being, But Is That a Good Thing? Where Does the Truth of Our Individual Existence, and Our Human Rights Go If We Don't Exist? Aren't We Just Living Another Lie, a Hyped-Up Delusion? While Non-Existence May Be the Most Efficient Way to Live Life These Days, It's Hardly the Most Compassionate or the Most Respectful.

I NEEDED COLOR

Image

[Jim Carrey the Narrator] What you do in life chooses you.

Image

You can choose not to do it, you can choose to do something safer.

Image

Your vocation chooses you.

Image

When I really started painting a lot,

Image

I had become so obsessed,

Image

that there was nowhere to move in my home.

Image

Paintings were everywhere. They were becoming part of the furniture. I was eating on them.

Image

I found myself looking around at one point, in a really bleak winter in New York, and it was just so depressing.

Image

And I think I needed color.

Image

[Jim Carrey talking to someone] It’s getting kind of pedestrian to me now, the teal.

Image

What I'd like to do is start threading in some purple, you know,

Image

into these things.

Image

Image

I’ll find the ultimate color and I’ll be able to reproduce it.

Image

[Jim Carrey the Narrator] You can tell what I love by the color of the paintings.

Image

You can tell my inner life by the darkness in some of them.

Image

And you can tell what I want from the brightness in some of them.

Image

[Jim Carrey in Private] It’s 5:00 a.m., so we’ll make a little more progress now.

Image

It’s really kind of cool what happens with these things, you know, because you really don’t know what a sculpture or a painting totally means. You think you do. Most of the time I start out with a plan. And then like a year later, I’ll realize that the painting was telling me what I needed to know about myself a year before.

Image

[Jim Carrey the Narrator] I think what makes someone an artist

Image

is they make models of their inner life.

Image

They make something physically come into being as inspired by their emotions, or their needs,

Image

or what they feel the audience needs.

Image

[Jim Carrey Speaking] I like the independence of it;

Image

I love the freedom of it.

Image

Image

And there’s an immediacy to it.

Image

It’s like you’re servicing your subconscious,

Image

and at the same time

Image

you’re doing something that someone’s going to relate to, hopefully.

Image

[Jim Carrey the Narrator] When I was a kid,

Image

I spent half my time in the living room

Image

performing for people.

Image

I spent the other half of the time in my bedroom by myself writing poetry

Image

and sketching.

Image

I was not the type of kid you could say, as a punishment, “Go to your room.”

Image

Because my room was heaven to me. My isolation was welcome.

Image

[Jim Carrey Speaking] People that are different have a shot at being original.

Image

You know, they’ve got motivation.

Image

[Jim Carrey the Narrator] I sketched all the time,

Image

but I didn’t do a lot of painting. Suddenly, six years ago, at a time when I was trying to heal a broken heart, I decided, “Well, I’ll paint.”

Image

[Jim Carrey Speaking] When your heart is in love, you’re floating weightless. And when you lose that love, you have to reenter the atmosphere, and it can get pretty rough,

Image

because you’re just bouncing off one molecule, onto the next, ripping through them at such a pace that they just ignite, and explode, until you find another heart that’s doing the same thing,

Image

has landed, and cooled,

Image

and then you start to float again.

Image

[Jim Carrey the Narrator] The energy that surrounds Jesus is

Image

electric. I don’t know if Jesus is real. I don’t know if he lived.

Image

I don’t know what he means.

Image

But the paintings of Jesus

Image

are really my desire to convey Christ-consciousness.

Image

I wanted you to have the feeling when you looked into his eyes that he was accepting of who you are.

Image

I wanted him to be able to stare at you and heal you from the painting.

Image

You can find every race in the face of Jesus. And I think that’s how every race imagines Jesus, they imagine him as their own.

Image

[Jim Carrey Speaking] That’s pretty. It’s funny, I get so stuck when I’m trying to choose colors, but when I just grab them, it’s cool.

Image

[Jim Carrey the Narrator] I don’t know what painting teaches me;

Image

I know that it just frees me.

Image

Free from the future.

Image

Free from the past.

Image

Free from regret.

Image

Free from worry.

Image

Something inside you

Image

is always telling a story.

Image

I believe every single thing that you see and hear

Image

is talking to you.

Image

Image

Image

You know, the bottom line with all of this, whether it’s performance, or it’s art, or it’s sculpture,

Image

is love.

Image

We want to show ourselves

Image

and have that be accepted.

Image

I love being alive. And the art is the evidence of that.

Full Speech: Jim Carrey's Commencement Address at the 2014 MUM Graduation (EN, FR, ES, RU, GR,...)

Actor Jim Carrey provided the inspiring, funny, and enlightening commencement speech for MUM’s class of 2014. He encouraged the students to think big and to choose love rather than give into fear. Many said it was the best commencement address they’d seen.

Jim Carrey Commencement Speech: Full Video & Transcript

Transcript of Full Commencement Address by Jim Carrey, Maharishi University of Management, May 24th, 2014

Image

[Maharishi University of Management Spokesman] Please welcome to speak to us the funniest man on earth, a performer of legendary comic genius, a children's book author of profound depth, an individual of enormous compassion, who is doing so much to make our world a better place,

Image

The Great Jim Carrey.

Image

[Audience] Clapping and hoot and hollering]

Image

Image

Image

[Jim Carrey] Thank you.

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

WHAT ARE YOU SITTING DOWN FOR?!

Image

I WAS GOING TO MILK THAT FOR A WHILE.

Image

You guys can stretch that out in post, right? To make that longer in the edit?

Thank you Bevan, thank you all! Jai Guru Dev.

[Audience] [Clapping]

Image

[Jim Carrey] I brought one of my paintings to show you today. I hope you guys are gonna be able see it okay.

Image

It’s not one of my bigger pieces. So you might wanna move down front — to get a good look at it.

Image

Faculty, Parents, Friends, Dignified guests, Graduating Class of 2014, and all the dead baseball players coming out of the corn to be with us today. (laughter) After the harvest there’s no place for them to hide — the fields are empty — there is no cover there! (laughter)

I am here to plant a seed today, a seed that will inspire you to move forward in life with enthusiastic hearts and a clear sense of wholeness. The question is, will that seed have a chance to take root,

Image

or will I be sued by Monsanto and forced to use their seed,

Image

Image

Image

which may not be totally “Ayurvedic.” (laughter)

Excuse me if I seem a little bit low energy tonight — today — whatever this is. I slept with my head to the North last night.

Image

(laughter)

Image

Oh man! Oh man! You know how that is, right kids? Yeah. Woke up right in the middle of Pitta and couldn’t get back to sleep till Vata rolled around. Crazy.

Image

Whooooooo. But I didn’t freak out.

Image

I used that time to eat a large meal and connect with someone special on Tinder. (laughter)

Because life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you. How do I know this? I don’t, but I’m making sound, and that’s the important thing.

Image

That’s what I’m here to do. Sometimes, I think that’s the only thing that's important, really. You know. Just letting each other know we’re here, reminding each other that we are part of a larger self. I used to think Jim Carrey is all that I was…

Image

Just a flickering light

A dancing shadow

The great nothing masquerading as something you can name

Seeking shelter in caves and foxholes, dug out hastily

An archer searching for his target in the mirror

Wounded only by my own arrows

Begging to be enslaved

Pleading for my chains

Image

Blinded by longing and tripping over paradise – can I get an “Amen”?! (applause)

[Audience] Amen!!

[Jim Carrey] You didn’t think I could be serious did ya’? I don’t think you understand who you’re dealing with! I have no limits! I cannot be contained, because I’m the container.

Image

You can’t contain the container, man! You can’t contain the container! (laughter)

Image

I used to believe that who I was ended at the edge of my skin, that I had been given this little vehicle called a body from which to experience creation,

Image

and though I couldn’t have asked for a sportier model, (laughter) it was after all a loaner and would have to be returned.

Image

Then, I learned that everything outside the vehicle was part of me, too,

Image

and now I drive a convertible. Yeah, man.

Image

Top down, wind in my hair! (laughter)

Image

I am elated and truly, truly, truly excited to be present and fully connected to you at this important moment in your journey. I hope you’re ready to open the roof and take it all in?! (audience doesn’t react)

Image

Okay, four more years then! They're obviously not ready yet. They need some more cutting. (laughter)

Image

I want to thank the Trustees, the Administrators, the Faculty of MUM for creating an institution worthy of Maharishi’s ideals of education. A place that teaches the knowledge and experience necessary to be productive in life, as well as enabling the students, through Transcendental Meditation and ancient Vedic knowledge to slack off twice a day for an hour and a half!! (laughter) — don’t think you’re fooling me!!! — (applause) but, I guess it has some benefits. It does allow you to separate who you truly are and what’s real, from the stories that run through your head.

You have given them the ability to walk behind the mind’s elaborate set decoration, and to see that there is a huge difference between a dog that is going to eat you in your mind, and an actual dog that’s going to eat you. (laughter) That may sound like no big deal, but many never learn that distinction and they spend a great deal of their lives living in a fight or flight response.

Image

I’d like to acknowledge all of you wonderful parents — way to go! What a fantastic job you’ve done — for your tireless dedication, your love, your support, most of all for the attention you’ve paid to your children. I have a saying, “Beware the unloved,” because they will eventually hurt themselves… or me! (laughter)

But when I look at this group here, you know, I feel really safe! I do!

Image

I’m just going to say it — my room is not locked! My room is not locked! (laughter) No doubt some of you will turn out to be crooks! But white-collar stuff — Wall Street, that type of thing ya’ know, crimes committed by people with self-esteem! Stuff parents can still be proud of in a weird way. (laughter)

And to the graduating class of 2017 — minus 3! You didn’t let me finish! (laughter) — Congratulations! (applause)

Image

Yes, give yourself a round of applause, please. You are the vanguard of knowledge and consciousness; a new wave in a vast ocean of possibilities. On the other side of that door, there is a world starving for new ideas, new leadership.

I’ve been out there for 30 years!

Image

She’s a wild cat! (laughter) Oh, she’ll rub up against your leg and purr until you pick her up and start pettin’ her,

Image

and then out of nowhere she’ll swat you in the face. It can be rough out there, but that’s OK, because there is soft serve ice cream, with sprinkles! (laughter) I guess that’s what I’m really trying to say here today; sometimes it’s okay to eat your feelings! (laughter)

Now fear is going to be a player in your life, but you get to decide how much. You can spend your whole life imagining ghosts, worrying about the pathway to the future, but all there will ever be is what’s happening here, and the decisions we make in this moment, which are based in either love or fear.

So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality.

Image

What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we never dare to ask the universe for it.

Image

I’m saying, I’m the proof that you can ask the universe for it — please!

Image

(applause)

Image

And if it doesn’t happen for you right away, it’s only because the universe is so busy fulfilling my order:

Image

party size! (laughter)

My father could have been a great comedian, but he didn’t believe that thatwas possible for him, so he made a conservative choice. Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant, and when I was 12 years old, he was let go from that safe job and our family had to do whatever we could to survive.

I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love. (applause)

That’s not the only thing he taught me though: I watched the effect of my father’s love and humor and how it altered the world around me, and I thought,

Image

“That’s something to do, that’s something worth my time.”

It wasn’t long before I started acting up. People would come over to the house and they would be greeted by a 7 yr old throwing himself down a large flight of stairs. (laughter) They would say, “What happened?” And I would say, “I don’t know — let’s check the replay.” I'd go back to the top of the stairs and come back down in slow motion.

Image

(Jim reenacts coming down the stairs in slow-mo) It was a very strange household. (laughter)

My father used to brag that I wasn’t a ham — I was the whole pig. And he treated my talent as if it was his second chance. When I was about 28, after a decade as a professional comedian, I realized one night in LA that the purpose of my life had always been to free people from concern, just like my dad.

Image

When I realized this, I dubbed my new devotion, “The Church of Freedom From Concern” — “The Church of FFC”— and I dedicated myself to that ministry.

Image

What’s yours? How will you serve the world? What do they need that your talent can provide? That’s all you have to figure out. As someone who has done what you are about to go and do, I can tell you from experience, the effect you have on others is the most valuable currency there is. (applause)

Because everything you gain in life will rot and fall apart, and all that will be left of you is what was in your heart.

Image

My choosing to free people from concern got me to the top of a mountain. Look where I am — look what I get to do! Everywhere I go –

Image

and I’m going to get emotional because when I tap into this, it really is extraordinary to me — I did something that made people present their best selves to me wherever I go. (applause) I am at the top of the mountain, and I was, and the only one I hadn’t freed was myself, and that’s when my search for identity deepened.

I wondered who I’d be without my fame.

Image

Who would I be if I said things that people didn’t want to hear, or if I defied their expectations of me? What if I showed up to the party without my Mardi Gras mask and I refused to flash my breasts for a handful of beads? (laughter)

Image

I’ll give you a moment to wipe that image out of your mind. (laughter)

But you guys are so ahead of the game. You already know who you are and that peace, that peace that we’re after, lies somewhere beyond personality, beyond the perception of others, beyond invention and disguise, even beyond effort itself. You can join the game, fight the wars, play with form all you want, but to find real peace, you have to let the armor go. Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Don’t let anything stand in the way of the light that shines through this form.

Image

Risk being seen in all of your glory. (A sheet drops and reveals Jim’s painting. Applause.)

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

It’s not big enough! This painting is big for a reason. It's called “High Visibility.” (laughter) It’s about picking up the light and daring to be seen. Here’s the tricky part. Everyone is attracted to the light.

Image

The party host up at the top, who thinks unconsciousness is bliss and is always offering to drink from the bottles that empty you;

Image

Misery, below her, despises the light — can’t stand when you’re doing well — wishes you nothing but the worst;

Image

The Queen of Diamonds under him needs a King to build her house of cards; And the Hollow One down bottom there, who will cling to your leg and say, “Please don’t leave me behind for I have abandoned myself.”

Even those who are closest to you and most in love with you; the people you love most in the world will find clarity confronting at times. This painting took me thousands of hours to complete and when I was finished — (applause) thank you — yes, thousands of hours. I’ll never get them back, I’ll never get them back (kidding) — I worked on this for so long, it was weeks and weeks, like a mad man alone on a scaffolding —

Image

and when I was finished one of my friends said, “This would be a cool black light painting.” (laughter)

Image

So I started over. (All the lights go off in the Dome and the painting is showered with black light.)

Image

Image

Image

Whooooo!

Image

Welcome to Burning Man! (applause) Some pretty crazy characters up there,

Image

but better up there than in here. (points to head) Painting is one of the ways I free myself from concern, a way to stop the world through total mental, spiritual and physical involvement.

But even with that, comes a feeling of divine dissatisfaction. Because ultimately, we’re not the avatars we create. We’re not the pictures on the film stock.

Image

We are the light that shines through. All else is just smoke and mirrors. Distracting, but not truly compelling.

I’ve often said that I wished people could realize all their dreams of wealth and fame so they could see that it’s not where you’re going to find your sense of completion. Like many of you, I was concerned about going out into the world and doing something bigger than myself, until someone smarter than myself made me realize that there is nothing bigger than myself! (laughter)

My soul is not contained within the limits of my body. My body is contained within the limitlessness of my soul —

Image

one unified field of nothing dancing for no particular reason, except maybe to comfort and entertain itself. (applause) As that shift happens in you, you won’t be feeling the world, you’ll be felt by it — you will be embraced by it. Now, I’m always at the beginning. I have a reset button, and I ride that button constantly.

Once that button is functioning in your life, there’s no story that the mind could create that will be as compelling. Imagination is always manufacturing scenarios — both good and bad — and the ego tries to keep you trapped in the multiplex of the mind. Our eyes are not viewers, they are also projectors that are running a second story over the picture that we see in front of us all the time. Fear is writing that script, and the working title is, ‘I’ll never be enough.’

You're going to look at a person like me and say,

Image

“How could we ever hope to reach those kinds of heights, Jim? How can we make a painting that’s too big for our home? How do you fly so high without a special breathing apparatus?” (laughter)

Image

This is the voice of the ego. And if you listen to it, there will always be someone who seems to be doing better than you. No matter what you gain, ego will not let you rest. It will tell you that you cannot stop until you’ve left an indelible mark on the earth, until you’ve achieved immortality. How tricky is this ego that it would tempt us with the promise of something we already possess.

So I just want you to relax—you know, that’s my job—relax and dream up a good life! I had a substitute teacher from Ireland in the second grade that told my class during Morning Prayer that when she wants something, anything at all, she prays for it, and promises something in return, and she always gets what she wants. I’m sitting at the back of the classroom, thinking, "Wow. My family can’t afford a bike." So I went home and I prayed for one, and I promised I would recite the rosary every night in exchange. Broke it—broke that promise. (laughter)

But two weeks later, I got home from school to find a brand new mustang bike with a banana seat and easy rider handlebars!

Image

Yeah, from fool to cool! My family informed me that I had won the bike in a raffle that a friend of mine had entered my name in, without my knowledge whatsoever.

Image

So that type of thing has been happening to me ever since, and as far as I can tell, it’s just about letting the universe know what you want and working toward it while letting go of how it comes to pass. (applause)

Your job is not to figure out how it’s going to happen for you, but to open the door in your head, and when the door opens in real life, just walk through it. And don’t worry if you miss your cue because there's always doors opening. They keep opening.

And when I say, “life doesn’t happen to you, it happens for you.” I really don’t know if that’s true. I’m just making a conscious choice to perceive challenges as something beneficial so that I can deal with them in the most productive way. You’ll come up with your own style, that’s part of the fun!

Oh, and why not take a chance on faith as well? Take a chance on faith — not religion, but faith.

Image

Not hope, but faith. I don’t believe in hope. Hope is a beggar. Hope walks through the fire, and faith leaps over it.

You are ready and able to do beautiful things in this world, and after you walk through those doors today, you will only ever have two choices: love or fear. Choose love, and don’t ever let fear turn you against your playful heart.

Thank you so much. Jai Guru Dev. I’m so honored. Thank you.

Image

Image

Image

Image

I love you.

Jim Carrey says the old him is gone, meet his replacement

[Reporter] I mean, is it kind of scary releasing this out to the world, and just be so vulnerable, and having this "inside-of-yourself" exposed?

Image

[Jim Carrey] No! Because there is no me, no self. Jim Carrey is gone; actually, never existed. And I know that now. So I’m able to take gigantic chances with this thing people know as Jim Carrey. And I’m actually able to communicate in an authentic way, because there’s really nothing at stake. None of it matters to me. What seems to be happening is that things seem to be happening that matter to other people, or apparently matter to other people.

Image

But I feel free of it. I’m free of whatever construct that appeared to be.

Image

And you create yourself at the beginning of your life to fit in, and to be accepted, to be admired. And then at some point – maybe, if you’re lucky –

Image

[starts singing] things start splitting at the seams, and now the whole thing’s tumbling down. [Stops singing]

And you’re free.

Jim Carrey Sounds Off on Icons and More at NYFW 2017 | E! Live from the Red Carpet

Image

[Catt Sadler] Hey, Jim Carrey.

Image

Yes.

Image

I’ve covered a lot of fashion shows.

Image

This is the first time I've run into Jim Carrey.

Image

Wait!

Image

Tell me! Is it true you’re wandering the streets? You need a date to the party? What’s up?!

Image

[Jim Carrey] No, no, no. I’m doing just fine.

Image

There’s no meaning to any of this, so I wanted to find the most meaningless thing that I could come to and join. And here I am.

[Catt Sadler] They are celebrating –

[Jim Carrey] I mean, you’ve got to admit, it’s completely meaningless.

[Catt Sadler] Well, they say they are celebrating icons inside. Do you believe in icons?

Image

[Jim Carrey] Celebrating icons! Boy, that is just the absolute lowest-aiming possibility that we can come up with. Icons! Do you believe in icons? I believe in personalities.

Image

I don’t believe that you exist. But there is a wonderful fragrance in the air.

[Catt Sadler] You don’t believe that certain icons have the power to make change, to think differently, to be bold, to inspire others. Artistry! You’re one of them.

Image

[Jim Carrey] [Voice Imitation] On the good foot! Ha! Yeah. You shut her down, now! [ End Voice Imitation] No, I don’t believe in icons. I don’t believe in personalities.

Image

[Speaking to camera] I believe that peace lies beyond personality, beyond invention and disguise. Beyond the red “S” that you wear on your chest that makes bullets bounce off. I believe that it’s deeper than that.

Image

I believe that we’re a field of energy dancing for itself. And I don’t care.

Image

[Catt Sadler] But Jim, you got really dressed up for the occasion. You look good. Was that an accident?

Image

[Jim Carrey] No, I didn’t get dressed up.

[Catt Sadler] Who did?

[Jim Carrey] There is no me.

[Catt Sadler] There is no “you”?

[Jim Carrey] No.

[Catt Sadler] We’re not here? This is a dream?

[Jim Carrey] There is just things happening. And there are clusters of tetrahedrons moving around together.

Image

[Catt Sadler] Okay. So what’s happening in our world right now,

Image

because there is a lot of news that actually is relevant, that is not that uplifting?

[Jim Carrey] Here’s the thing: It’s not our world. That’s the key.

[Catt Sadler] None of this is real?

[Jim Carrey] Nope! Nope!

[Catt Sadler] So you’re just passing through?

Image

[Jim Carrey] We don’t matter! We don’t matter!

[Catt Sadler] Oh, wow!

Image

[Jim Carrey] That’s the good news.

[Catt Sadler] Okay!!!

Jim Carrey Addresses His Existential Interview At NYFW

Image

[Reporter] When “Man in the Moon” came out, there was all this talk about “the process” that you went through when you “became” Andy Kaufman. Did you ever have in the back of your mind back then that you wanted to share that story in this way that you are getting to do now?

[Jim Carrey] Yeah. And I thought I had “become” Andy Kaufman, but there was no “me,” actually at the end of it all. I realized that this character was making choices to play a character. So that’s what kind of happened. That’s what Chris found in this interview and its footage, that there was actually existential – not a crisis, but a discovery going on.

[Reporter] There’s been a lot of talk in the last few days, well today, recently –

[Jim Carrey] A lot of people making sound over here.

[Reporter] So much of that.

[Jim Carrey] That’s right.

[Reporter] People talking about what you did at New York Fashion Week. And you talked about identity in the interview. All these ideas. Do you think that people kind of just don’t understand it, or they haven’t clued in to this whole thing you’re talking about? Are people wearing masks?

Image

[Jim Carrey] I think we’re all trying to add things to ourselves so that we can finally define ourselves, and then everybody will get us and go, “Okay, this is what you are.” And then if you actually get there, you will find it so empty that you’ll realize that’s really not what it’s about. It’s about not only just going with the flow, but it’s about not taking it personally. You know? It’s like the difference between how “a house,” and “my house” is a world of difference. And it’s the “my” that is the problem. So you can do all this without the “my” involved. You can do it in a way that’s not – life isn’t happening to you, it’s happening for you, for the good of everyone. It’s a play. It’s a giant field of consciousness dancing for itself. And you’re here to make me happy. It’s kind of making itself happy. It’s like ONE SOUL.

Another philosopher and stern critic of Enlightenment who helped bridge fascism and environmentalism was Martin Heidegger. A much more renowned thinker than Klages, Heidegger preached "authentic Being" and harshly criticized modern technology, and is therefore often celebrated as a precursor of ecological thinking. On the basis of his critique of technology and rejection of humanism, contemporary deep ecologists have elevated Heidegger to their pantheon of eco-heroes:

Heidegger's critique of anthropocentric humanism, his call for humanity to learn to "let things be," his notion that humanity is involved in a "play" or "dance" with earth, sky, and gods, his meditation on the possibility of an authentic mode of "dwelling" on the earth, his complaint that industrial technology is laying waste to the earth, his emphasis on the importance of local place and "homeland," his claim that humanity should guard and preserve things, instead of dominating them -- all these aspects of Heidegger's thought help to support the claim that he is a major deep ecological theorist. [22]

Such effusions are, at best, dangerously naive. They suggest a style of thought utterly oblivious to the history of fascist appropriations of all the elements the quoted passage praises in Heidegger.

That’s how I feel. People say, “Well, I have a soul.” YOU don’t have a soul. There’s no YOU. But I feel like there is a soul, and it includes everything. And we wake up in the morning and you feel like, “I’m the universe.” You don’t have to reach for the stars. You can just let life happen. And walk through the doors.

[Invisible Reporter] We’ll have to wrap up. Sorry.

[Reporter] Thanks very much.

Image

[Jim Carrey] Sorry, you’ve run out of time.

[Reporter] Well listen. You’ve made me very happy. So thank you for your time.

[Jim Carrey] No, actually I didn’t make YOU happy.

[Reporter] Right! I don’t know who you made happy, but there’s a happy feeling here.

[Jim Carrey] No. You’re just a cluster of tetrahedrons.

[Reporter] I’m still trying to figure this all out!

[Jim Carrey] You're a pleasant one.

[Reporter] We’ll get there eventually.

Image

[Jim Carrey] Nice to see you.

[Reporter] You too.

Jim Carrey Explains "Bizarre Interview" at New York Fashion Week (2017)

TODAY EXTRA

Image

[Sonya, Entertainment Reporter] Comedian Jim Carrey has been forced to explain a bizarre interview he gave at New York Fashion Week just days ago.

Image

[David, Entertainment Reporter] Joining us for more now is our man in Hollywood, Sam Rubin. Sam, this interview where he circled the reporter, was strange. Can you bring us up to speed on what’s happened?

Image

[Sam Rubin, Entertainment Reporter] Very, very strange, and it ricocheted all around the world. Sonya and David, good morning to you both. Jim Carrey, as you both know, at Fashion Week sort of said the reporter he was talking to, Catt Sadler, that she didn’t exist, that he preferred personalities to icons.

Image

He was sort of amusingly combative, saying in essence he wanted to find the dumbest most meaningless place possible to go, and that’s why he went to Fashion Week. Now, having seen that interview go everywhere, he’s explained it sort of. Look at this:

Image

[Jim Carrey] As an actor you play characters and then if you go deep enough into those characters, you realize that your own character is pretty thin to begin with.

Image

And then you suddenly have this separation and go, “Who is Jim Carrey? Oh! He doesn’t exist actually.” There’s just relative manifestation of consciousness appearing, and then somebody gave him a bunch of ideas, they gave him a name and a religion and a nationality, and he clustered those together into something that’s supposed to be a personality.

Image

[David, Entertainment Reporter] Oh! Well, I had no idea that he had ridden to a High Self. So he and Taylor Swift have just called each other and said, “We’re both dead.”

[Sonya, Entertainment Reporter] [Laughing] That’s really an interesting kind of –

[David, Entertainment Reporter] It’s certainly esoteric.

Image

[Sam Rubin, Entertainment Reporter] He was levitating as he said all of that.

Image

[Sonya, Entertainment Reporter] Is he Truman Show?

[Sam Rubin, Entertainment Reporter] Yeah, yeah. Truman Show. Ace Ventura.

[Sonya, Entertainment Reporter] It’s like he’s become that character. Like he doesn’t exist without an actual character to play.

[David, Entertainment Reporter] He’s just a shell of a man waiting for a role to play.
