Monsanto has donated $1 million to build a community education center in the University of Missouri–St. Louis’ new building in Grand Center, university officials said.

The Monsanto Community Education Center will occupy the whole first floor of the new UMSL at Grand Center Building at 3651 Olive St. in St. Louis. The center will house classrooms and meeting spaces.

The building also will serve as the new home for the studios and offices of KWMU-FM, St. Louis Public Radio.

The three-story, 27,000-square-foot building, designed by St. Louis architects Heather Woofter and Sung Ho Kim of Axi:Ome, is expected to be completed in June.

UMSL Chancellor Tom George said the donation will establish a center where the university and radio station can offer community programming, classes in digital and new media, and programs for a wider and diverse audience.

The university has a lease/purchase agreement for the building with BC Development of Kansas City, Mo. Fundraising continues for the $12 million project and has resulted in nearly $8 million to date. The campus plans to fund another $2 million.

A fundraising campaign has raised nearly $10 million for the $12 million project. S.M. Wilson and Co. of St. Louis is the general contractor. Chiodini Associates serves as architect of record. Larry Eisenberg, university architect for the University of Missouri System, is project manager.

Creve Coeur-based Monsanto (NYSE: MON) reported a $1.6 billion profit on sales of $11.8 billion in fiscal 2011. Hugh Grant is the seed company’s chairman, president and CEO.
