Action Alert

To end violence - and truly mourn its victims - we must acknowledge, and challenge the root causes beneath it.

Image

Boston activists speak out today - we need your help to amplify our urgent message.

Your voice matters. Click here to sign our Open Letter.
Take Action!

The last 24 hours have been devastating. The weeks leading up to it have been horrifying.

We have watched with sadness and anger as the deaths of children have mounted, racist mobs have rampaged, the fears of people throughout both Israel and Palestine have reached unbearable levels, and the collective punishment of the Palestinian people has intensified.

We can not wait one more moment to speak up. In such a terrible moment, we must join what we feel with what we know.

Please join me in signing this urgent Open Letter that says:http://org.salsalabs.com/o/301/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=16061

Only by ending the occupation and embracing equality can this terrible bloodshed end.

Our unshakeable belief in justice - as Jews and as human beings - compels us to acknowledge that the root of this violence lies in the Israeli government’s commitment to occupation over the well-being of Palestinians or Israelis. Where our leaders have so thoroughly refused that truth, it is our responsibility to hold it up.

So when we reach 18,000 signatures, we’ll publish the letter in Ha’aretz and The Forward - and call on our communities stand up with us.

In just the last two days, scores of Palestinians--with no place to hide--have been killed, while the entire population of Gaza experiences the terror of widespread bombing. Israelis have had to endure the fear of never knowing when or where the next rocket will fall.

We must speak up now.

Please join me and sign this urgent Open Letter that says, the occupation must end. And forward this to your friends so they do the same.

None of this should be happening. As we mourn all who have died, we reaffirm that all Israelis and Palestinians deserve security, justice, and equality.

The occupation, with US military and financial support, is the root cause. And it systematically denies the very humanity of Arabs, while valuing Jewish lives at the expense of others.

Anti-Palestinian bigotry is not only acceptable but a powerful political tool in Israel. Long before this latest escalation, everyday life for Palestinians meant increasing numbers of settlements taking over their lands and homes, and a web of violence and control which reached into every area of life, simply because they are not Jewish. The recent and very public violence against Palestinians in the streets of Jerusalem and elsewhere did not happen in a vacuum.

Enough is enough. We are not going away.

Those few Israelis who are bravely speaking out against their governments’ inhumane policies need to know that they have our support. Those Palestinians who are under daily assault need to know that we see them.

As part of a vast network of people across the globe, we have more power than we may think. But we have to take action.

Sign the Open Letter and send the message: only by confronting occupation and embracing true equality can this terrible bloodshed end.

Sincerely,

Action Alert

We're working around the clock to stop the disastrous attack on Gaza . But we wanted to take time to share JVP's basic principles that apply to our work everyday. If they speak to you, please forward them to friends and colleagues. Now is the time to invite our friends and families to stand with us!

We're mobilizing in the streets every day. And those mobilizations express our unique long-term vision and strategy.

Image

Jewish Voice for Peace in the streets.

Yesterday, the Israeli military struck a UN school at the Jabaliya refugee camp where some 3,300 Palestinians were seeking shelter, and not long after, a crowded marketplace during what was supposed to be a humanitarian lull.

This past weekend, Israeli soldiers killed 3 Palestinians as the West Bank erupted in mass protests beyond anything seen in years, while some 7,000 anti-war protestors in Tel Aviv were taunted with chants like "Death to Arabs," and worse.

Throughout Israel, racist attacks against Palestinians, and Jewish anti-war activists as well, continued to make it unsafe on the streets, while rockets struck fear in the hearts of families across the country.

And our response? Jewish Voice for Peace supporters like you mobilized again and again, building an unprecedented wave of resistance—especially Jewish resistance— to Israel’s war of choice and unbearable assault on Palestinians.

But we also know that achieving justice for Palestinians, and a peaceful future for all the people of Israel and Palestine is long-term work. We're not simply against this attack - we're for justice and universal human rights.

And these are the principles we think will get us there:

1) The siege, assaults on Gaza, and the occupation would not be possible without unconditional financial and diplomatic support provided by the US, so any successful peace agreement requires a change in US foreign policy. It is our job to change these unjust policies and to oppose lobby groups like AIPAC who pressure policymakers into unconditional support for Israel while claiming, falsely, to speak for all Jews.

2) The Israeli government has proven its interest is not peace, but rather acquiring more and more land, for Jews only. Decades of U.S-brokered "peace talks" have provided cover while Israel actually expanded settlements. Israel won't give up its power willingly, and must be pressured. That's why we support Palestinian-led unarmed resistance, including the on-the-ground resistance in Palestinian villages, and the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement which gives every one of us an opportunity to vote with our wallets.

We already know from Israeli leaders that economic pressure can and is making a difference. We work strategically with thousands of activists and partners to build grassroots boycott and divestment campaigns on campuses, churches and in communities that we can all use to extricate ourselves from corporations that profit from the occupation.

3) Any resolution that has a chance of achieving a lasting peace must address Israel’s 47-year-old occupation, the unequal treatment of Palestinian citizens of Israel, and the creation of what has now grown to be the world's largest refugee population when Israel was established in 1948. Therefore we work to educate ourselves and others about the Nakba (catastrophe), the forced dispossession and expulsion of Palestinians when Israel was created.

4) Sustainable long-term change comes from the grassroots, which is why we dedicate resources to training, organizing and cultivating leaders in over 40 chapters, on campuses, and in networks where we can help. In the last 3 weeks our chapters have organized hundreds of actions, often risking arrest, to raise a cry against those institutions and corporations that aid the Israeli assault on Palestinians.

It's also why we partner, not only with Israeli and Palestinian peace activists, but with a diverse range of groups committed to a just peace- Christians, Muslims, Arab Americans, artists, academics, religious leaders, students, and more. Together, we move mountains.

5) While it is up to Palestinians to lead their liberation movement, we Jews must lead ours. We know that one people's freedom cannot be achieved at the expense of another's, and that Israelis can never be made safe by oppressing Palestinians. We also fight intolerance and racism in Jewish communities, work with young leaders who will replace the out of touch leadership of many Jewish institutions, and support efforts to undo the dehumanization of the oppressor in Israel and all over.

To that end, we invite you to JOIN US. We are only as powerful as our willingness to speak out together.

Please forward this email to anyone you know who cares about this issue. If you're not already on it, sign up on our list, get our bulletins, and learn more about what you can do for a lasting peace for all peoples of Israel and Palestine.

Action Alert

People all over the world are stepping up - many for the first time - to send a clear, urgent message: We Choose Freedom for All.

Stop everything—now— for just 4 minutes.

Sit quietly with this just-released joint Jewish and Palestinian video about Gaza. If you are with loved ones or colleagues—ask them to sit down and watch with you.

And take it in.

For this heartbreaking but necessary video, we asked for help from Jewish Voice for Peace members worldwide, and every hero, every artist, we knew.

And they all said yes. Yes to an end to all bombing. Yes to justice for Palestine. Yes to freedom for all people.

Gloria Steinem said yes, Chuck D and Brian Eno said yes, Angela Davis and Jonathan Demme said yes. Diana Buttu and Tony Kushner said yes. Alison Bechdel and Eve Ensler said yes. Noura Erakat, Maya Wind and Remi Kanazi said yes.

Rigoberta Menchu and Desmond Tutu said yes.

In short, the people in this video represent the human family, standing on the side of freedom— for Palestinians and Israelis alike. And we say No to this unspeakable carnage wrought by one of the world’s most powerful militaries dropping explosives on an imprisoned and defenseless population.

Watch the video, share it on Facebook and via email, join the campaign and add your own photo. Invite others to do the same.

And take in just some of the names and faces and ages of the children, mothers and fathers, and entire families who have been killed in this horrific assault on the captive population of Gaza.

And take in our message, one that truly comes from a place of love for justice: that a lasting peace for Israelis and Palestinians will never be possible until we address decades of Palestinian dispossession, statelessness, inequality, exile, occupation and siege.

Then share this video with 10 people:

People who are scared to say publicly what they think privately.

People who hold tightly to their fantasy that Palestinians and Jews are mortal enemies, so they don't feel the horror of what the Israeli government is doing to human beings, just like them.

People who may need to be reminded that injustice will go on long after the bombing stops - unless we make real change.

People who feel isolated and powerless in the face of this ongoing massacre.

Click here: Freedom4Palestine.org and add your photo.

I just ask that if you choose to memorialize the name of someone who has died, that you memorize that name, find out everything you can about them, tape their name or image to your wall, and make him or her a part of your story.

And most important, honor their lives by taking to the streets, joining a JVP chapter, starting a divestment campaign, talking to your family and friends.

Sincerely,

Image

Cecilie Surasky
Deputy Director

PS: In Israel, radio spots naming those killed in Gaza have been banned. In the US, media coverage hasn’t been much better. Please, share this video today – we have to take responsibility ourselves for sharing our humanity, our grief, and our hope for the future.

I can't believe we're still witnessing such unspeakable violence - that there are so many more human lives extinguished by this horrific attack. I am more grateful than ever for all the ways you're helping to protest this nightmare. I know that together we will end it.

Action & Analysis

-- with a deepening humanitarian crisis emerging in Gaza, we hope you'll find the updates and article links below useful. We're also continuing to press Jewish leaders to stand up to the Israeli policies responsible for this crisis - can you forward this email to 5 friends and ask them to sign our letter (below)?

Many thanks

-Stefanie

A new 72-hour ceasefire has begun in Gaza. But what comes next? We need to keep learning - and taking action - for justice.

Image

JVP-Philly members arrested asking Jewish Federation to stand for justice in Gaza.

Help us pressure Jewish leaders to stand for justice
Take Action!

At 12:01 this morning (local time), another 72-hour ceasefire between Israel and Hamas began. As negotiations move haltingly ahead, what we do know is that Gaza is in a state of ruin. Even if the IDF doesn't fire another single shot, this attack already stands as the most destructive to life and property that we have witnessed. Israel has killed over 1,900 Palestinians, including 415 children, and injured more than 10,000. It's hard to imagine, much less make sense of.

Here are four critical points to understand and push out into public debate - with links to some of the articles we think are most helpful looking forward over the coming days.

Gaza has been decimated

“I’ve never seen such massive destruction ever before,” is how Peter Maurer, president of the International Committee of the Red Cross, described Gaza last week. Over 10,000 homes have been destroyed, with another 30,000 damaged. Gaza’s lone power plant that was hit by Israeli missiles July 29th, affecting sewage treatment, communications, refrigeration, healthcare, and almost every aspect of daily life . Hundreds of schools, mosques, factories, and farms have also been destroyed or damaged. And even before this attack, Gaza was still rebuilding from the Cast Lead offensive in 2009 and Pillar of Cloud in 2012.

A Major Health Crisis is Unfolding

Before this crisis, Gaza had just 2,047 hospital beds. That's roughly one for every 5 injured Palestinians. People are being discharged far earlier than they should be as even more critical patients come in. Medical supplies - including pain medication - are in extremely short supply. And of course those returning home to recover often have no home to go to, and almost all of them, certainly, face the same water and power crisis as they try to heal.

The key Palestinian “demand” is a basic right.

In the formal negotiations in Cairo as well the courts of public opinion worldwide, the key sticking point is the Palestinian demand that Israel lift its 7-year siege of the Gaza Strip. But the blockade shouldn’t even be on the negotiating table. The siege is patently illegal, and so lifting it isn’t a concession- it’s an overdue obligation.

The blockade is the impediment to a more lasting truce. Palestinian American legal scholar Noura Erakat said it best: “The current situation is a recurrence of Israel’s bloody attacks on Gaza in the winter of 2008-2009 as well as November 2012. Absent efforts to address the root causes of this conflict, it will be repeated yet again in the near future. The primary issue is that of Israel’s military and colonial rule over the Palestinian population of the occupied territories, including Gaza, which is characterized by a discriminatory apartheid legal regime and brutal repression. When the rockets stop flying and the aerial strikes cease, Palestinians will continue to die a slow and protracted death under the boot of Israel’s occupation."

What we have here is a difference between one side negotiating for its fundamental rights, and another angling to extend and deepen its occupation.

Global outrage has not (yet) led to Israeli accountability

As Israeli journalist Larry Derfner said this morning: "The world is shocked by the death and devastation in Gaza, it understands that the “root cause” is Israel’s half-century denial of freedom to the Palestinians, and it knows that the Netanyahu government has no interest whatsoever in setting the Palestinians free – yet the world, even now, is letting Israel get away with it." In spite of the massive public outcry over Israel's ongoing assault on Palestinian civilians, Israel continues to enjoy absolute impunity from governments around the globe. Even as tens of thousands gather in the streets in the US, our senate passes unanimous resolutions endorsing the war and the Obama administration admitted we are restocking Israeli ammunition even as it is used to decimate civilians. The fact is, governments including our own aren't going to do it. It's down to you and me to hold Israel accountable for it's actions.

What can we do?

Even after so much suffering, prominent American Jewish institutional leaders remain committed to this war, and silent in the face of the clear moral outrage that is the blockade. This silence provides cover for those who would profit from ongoing conflict and killing. This silence erases all of us - Jews and allies - who want to resolve not only this devastatingly escalated period of violence, but the underlying systems of occupation, discrimination, and displacement driving it forward.

Last Friday, six members of JVP Philadelphia were arrested trying to deliver the more than 26,000 signatures on an Open Letter to the heads of the Jewish Federations of North America, the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism, and the Jewish Council on Public Affairs. This week, we’ll continue to pressure them to shift course and decide to stand with the growing segment of our community that wants genuine peace with justice.

But we need your help. Please, don’t just learn about what’s going on - help us change it.

Click here to sign our Open Letter. http://org.salsalabs.com/o/301/p/dia/action3/common/public/?action_KEY=16188

Over the last 5 weeks we have all born witness to indescribable scenes of violence. Over 1,900 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed, including over 400 children. Many more have been injured or left homeless—refugees becoming refugees again.

And whether the current ceasefire holds or not, Palestinians in Gaza are still suffering from the crippling effects of an illegal blockade. From the knowledge that this latest attack is the third in six years - and the worst. From the knowledge that even when the time to rebuild comes, that recovery could be shattered again by the Israeli army at any time. And from the knowledge that the racism which powers such a brutal attack is also directed at Palestinians inside Israel, in the West Bank, and beyond.

As heartbroken as we all have been, we know that this is the time to act. We have seen real courage, even heroism, during this terrible time.

Including from you. Which is why we need you - please, become an official member of Jewish Voice for Peace today.

Many of you have been grieving in public, organizing protests, hosting vigils, reaching out to begin difficult conversations with friends and family. You have been demanding accountability: from Israel, the United States, and the corporations that profit from the occupation and blockade. We just learned today the Obama administration will scrutinize “at the highest levels” any future transfers of Hellfire missiles to Israel. All the more reason to keep on raising awareness and demanding accountability!

By becoming a JVP member, you'll be able to:

Work together. Membership connects you with the online and on-the ground action opportunities in your area.

Build skills. Get access to member-only trainings, support from JVP staff, and JVP's national leadership development network.

Launch new campaigns. We have more work to do than ever before, and new chapters taking off nationwide to mobilize community members for change.

Access experts. Join exclusive member briefings from experts in the US, Israel and Palestine with the analysis and news updates you need to carry the work ahead.

Our only choice in times like these is to take yet another concrete step forward toward justice. And we need to do it together.

Please, click here and become a JVP member today.

Do it because you believe in equality, justice, and human rights. Because you believe that we need each other right now more than ever. And because together, we can make a difference.

Dear Tara,

We're on the move. In the last few days, JVP activists have held protests inside the offices of California Senators Boxer and Feinstein and inside Jewish institutions in Denver and New York. We are demanding accountability from Congress and from our Jewish communities as well. We want them to affirm that the occupation and blockade must end and that the killing of any civilian is wrong.

Make no mistake: both our allies and our opponents are watching what Jewish Voice for Peace does. And that means it matters what you do - including whether or not you help us meet our August member drive goal by signing up as an official JVP member with just an $18 donation today.

Our opposition is watching us closely. They pay attention to how fast we're growing, and to figure out what we'd be capable of if we were able to grow even a little bit more powerful - with more campaigns, media work, and leadership training.

But our allies are watching us. This summer we've gotten so many emails and letters from Palestinians in the West Bank, in Gaza, throughout the diaspora - and from Israelis too. People who see JVP as proof that things could change in the United States, who see in our very existence a glimmer of what the future could - must - be like.

JVP is truly a unique organization.

We're led by Jewish values of justice, equality, and peace. And we embrace the reality that those values are shared with people from every tradition and community imaginable.

We run hard-hitting, laser-like policy campaigns to put economic pressure on the corporations that profit from occupation. And know that this movement is all about changing how people feel, believe, and even love.

We are powerful because of our broad, devoted base of volunteers - tens of thousands of people worldwide. And our organizing team is made up of the hardest working, most savvy, brilliant paid staff you'll find anywhere.

But we need you with us. We need your outrage and sadness and confusion and determination. And we need you to turn it into a concrete expression of your will to make things better. To stand up, so everyone can see us, for justice.

Please, take a moment right now, chip in $18, and sign on as an official member of Jewish Voice for Peace.

Best,
