Two Springfield City School District elementary schools were evacuated and a middle school was closed Friday morning after bomb threats against the buildings were made, according to school officials.

Perrin Woods Elementary School and Snowhill Elementary School students were evacuated from their buildings Friday morning and moved to an "alternate district location," according to a SCSD news release. The district dismissed students to their parents.

Additionally, Roosevelt Middle School was closed before the start of the school day related to the same bomb threats.

Law enforcement has swept the buildings and determined they are safe to enter. The district is working with local, state and federal authorities to investigate the bomb threats, officials said in a 2 p.m. release.

"All threats to the Springfield City School District are taken seriously and will be prosecuted at the highest levels," officials said in the release.

There are no other threats to Springfield City School District buildings, school officials said in a press release.

Friday marks the second day in a row that Springfield public school students were evacuated after the city gained national attention for unfounded right-wing rumors about the community's Haitian immigrant population.

On Thursday, Springfield City Hall and Fulton Elementary School were evacuated after bomb threats were sent to multiple city facilities, officials said. Every Clark County building was also closed Thursday out of "an abundance of caution," county officials said.

Thursday's evacuation of Fulton Elementary School was based on information received from the state fire marshal, school officials said.

A copy of Thursday's bomb threat acquired by the USA Today Network disparaged Springfield's Haitian community and referenced false claims, spread by prominent conservative figures like former president Donald Trump, that immigrants were eating pets and wildlife.

The author of Thursday's bomb threat said they had planted bombs in Springfield City Hall, Springfield Driver Exam Station, Ohio License Bureau Southside, Springfield Academy of Excellence and Fulton Elementary School.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — Bomb threats on Friday forced the evacuation and closure of public schools and municipal buildings for a second consecutive day, as the city continues to deal with sudden national attention due to false claims involving its Haitian population.

Students at Perrin Woods and Snowhill Elementary Schools in Springfield "were evacuated from their buildings to an alternate district location," school district spokesperson Jenna Leinasars said.

Roosevelt Middle School had already been "closed prior to the beginning of the school day in relation to the information received from the" Springfield Police Department, Leinasars added.

In addition to those school evacuations, several city commissioners and a municipal employee were the target of an emailed bomb threat, city spokesperson Karen Graves said.

A second email threatened multiple locations that included Springfield City Hall, Cliff Park High School, Perrin Woods Elementary School, Roosevelt Middle School, the Bureau of MotorVehicles and the Ohio License Bureau Southside, Graves added.

"As a precaution, all affected buildings have been evacuated. Authorities, with the support of explosive detection canines, have conducted thorough inspections and cleared the facilities listed in the threats," Graves said in a statement.

Local police and FBI agents based in Dayton are working "to determine the origin of these email threats," the city official said.

The city just west of Columbus has been the focal point of a national political firestorm that has included false rumors that Haitian immigrants have been stealing and eating household pets. City officials and police have said there is no credible information to support those outlandish claims.

Former President Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, have pushed those false claims as part of a broader effort to use Springfield as an example for what they say are the harmful consequences of immigration.

"Springfield is a beautiful community and your pets are safe in Springfield, Ohio," Springfield Mayor Rob Rue told MSNBC's "Katy Tur Reports" on Friday.

"We've made that known publicly and we're asking people to understand and believe the reports that we're sharing with them."

The mayor pleaded for this misinformation to stop.

"We need those that have a national stage that have a mic, with millions and millions (of followers), we need them to understand what their words are doing to cities like Springfield, Ohio," Rue said. "What we need is help. We don't need this misinformation."

Vance has also said there's been a “massive rise in communicable diseases” in Springfield, but Clark County Combined Health District Commissioner Chris Cook said Friday that's not accurate.

“Overall, we have not seen a substantial increase in all reportable communicable diseases," Cook said. "In fact, if you look at all reportable communicable diseases together (minus COVID) for the year ending 2023 you will see that we are at our lowest rate in Clark County since 2016.”

A representative for Vance, the U.S. senator who who grew up about 50 miles from Springfield in Middletown, could not be immediately reached for comment.

Alicia Victoria Lozano reported from Springfield, Ohio, and David K. Li reported from New York City.

This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

For the second day in a row, the Springfield region was hit by threats of violence, affecting schools, city officials and others.

The Springfield City School District closed Roosevelt Middle School and evacuated Perrin Woods and Snowhill Elementary schools Friday morning after the city received two bomb threats via email, according to a city release. Cliff Park High School, a charter school outside the Springfield district, was also evacuated.

According to the city, an email that was sent at 7:21 a.m., “targeted several City Commissioners and a city employee.” A second email at 7:45 a.m. targeted several schools as well at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles and the Ohio License Bureau Southside. All affected buildings were evacuated according to the city.

“In response to these threats, local and regional law enforcement, along with our public safety partners, have acted promptly,” city officials said. “We are committed to the safety and well-being of our community and take all threats to public safety with the utmost seriousness.”

Springfield officials and police are working with the Dayton FBI office to “determine the origin of the email threats.”

Springfield Mayor Rob Rue said the threats and negative attention the city has received are distracting officials from doing their jobs effectively, resulting in increased personnel, overtime and safety concerns.

Rue said the community is hurting right now and needs “help, not hate.” He said the community needs to unify instead of divide, and he questioned the goal of people who are spreading hatred.

“There are a lot more people that are for the community than against,” Rue said.

Perrin Woods and Snowhill Elementary students were evacuated from their buildings to a different district location after receiving information from the Springfield Police Division, school district officials confirmed.

At mid-morning, the district was in the process of a controlled release to dismiss students to their parents.

Roosevelt Middle School also closed, before the beginning of the school day, after the district received information from the police division. Some parents who were arriving at Roosevelt with their students were turned away, according to reports.

There were no additional threats made to other school district buildings, officials said.

Cliff Park High School, a Springfield charter school, also evacuated its building, Cliff Park officials said. Second session students who attend from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. will work remotely. First sessions students attend from 7:30 a.m. to noon.

Clark County government officials said their buildings were open for business Friday.

On Thursday, several city, county and school buildings around Springfield were closed because of a bomb threat to multiple facilities throughout the city.

This included City Hall, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, the Springfield Driver’s Exam Station, Ohio License Bureau on the south side, Springfield Academy of Excellence and Fulton Elementary School. They were all cleared using explosive-detecting canines.

The Springfield school district on Thursday had evacuated students from Fulton. Parents were told to pick up their children from Springfield High School, where they had been taken. Fulton was evacuated based on information the district received from the State Fire Marshal.

August 23, 2024

Bodycam footage shows the shocking moment police confronted an Ohio woman accused of killing a cat and eating it on August 16. Canton police got a call from a concerned neighbor claiming Alexis Ferrell was “tweaking out.” Another caller who claimed to be Ferrell’s cousin said the suspected cat killer was livestreaming herself eating the dead animal on Facebook. When officers arrived, they found Ferrell kneeling down with the cat in her hands and fur all over her mouth. Law&Crime’s Sierra Gillespie breaks down the disturbing incident.

Ask uh 234 advised me they would and
11:25
they'll hold it as evidence
11:30
we explain the circumstances
11:35

11:45
ridiculous all right have a good night
11:50

Police in Ohio have released grisly footage of a woman who allegedly stomped on a cat's head before feasting on the animal in full view of horrified witnesses.

Allexis Ferrell, 27, was found with 'fur on her lips and blood on her hands' when police were called by shocked neighbors in the town of Canton on August 16.

Ferrell is a native of the town, which is 172 miles from Springfield - where unproven claims that Haitian migrants are 'eating pets' have sparked a national scandal.

While she is neither a migrant nor from Springfield, the video of her arrest has been spread online in viral discussions and debates about the issue.

Authorities have now revealed bodycam video of the incident.

'Officers were able to determine that Allexis had smashed the cat's head with her foot and then began to eat the cat,' police wrote in their report.

It comes after Donald Trump made extraordinary and unproven claims during his presidential debate that Haitian migrants are killing and eating their neighbors' pets in Springfield, some 170 miles away from Canton.

The bizarre footage opens seconds after police arrived to find a 'female squatting on a cat which appeared to have its head smashed in and the female with her hands on it'.

Officers confronted Ferrell and ordered her to put her hands behind her back before one remarked: 'Someone got rubber gloves? She's covered in blood.'

She makes no response as she is asked her address and read her Miranda rights, before the grossed out officer warns a colleague to put a blanket on the back seat of their squad car.

'Smile for me. Go like this,' he says as he holds up a camera, 'Did you eat that cat? Did you eat it?'

She bares her teeth for the picture and shakes her head slightly but says nothing.

'Why d'you kill it?' he demands.

A Springfield resident last month claimed that Haitian migrants were decapitating ducks in public parks and eating them last month

'I don't know,' she pipes in a small voice.

'Get in there. It's ridiculous,' he says as he shoves her into the car.

The first claims about pets being eaten over in Springfield were raised at a city commission meeting on July 30.

Furious locals used the forum to voice their feelings about the 15,000 Haitians who have arrived on Temporary Protected Status since 2020.

'I really challenge you guys to get out here and do something,' one angry resident told the meeting.

'These Haitians are running into trash cans, running into buildings, they're flipping cars in the middle of the streets.'

'They're in the park, grabbing up ducks by their neck, and cutting their head off and walking off with them. They're eating them.'

One anonymous poster to a Springfield residents' Facebook group claimed that her 'neighbor's daughter's friend' had lost her cat.

'One day she came home from work, as soon as she stepped out of her car, looked towards a neighbor's house, where Haitians live, and saw her cat hanging from a branch, like you'd do a deer for butchering, and they were carving it up to eat,' she explained.

Police and city officials in the town have been at pains to insist that there have been no credible reports of any migrants harming any pets.

But the rumors were amplified by Trump's running mate JD Vance before the ex-president himself wielded them in his debate with Kamala Harris.

'In Springfield, they're eating the dogs,' he told her. 'The people that came in. They're eating the cats.

'They're eating -- they're eating the pets of the people that live there.

'And this is what's happening in our country.'

Told by ABC moderator David Muir that there had been no credible reports to the authorities, the ex-president insisted that had 'seen people on television'.

'The people on television say my dog was taken and used for food,' he added.

A spokesperson for Springfield police was among those denying the claims.

'In response to recent rumors alleging criminal activity by the immigrant population in our city, [Springfield] we wish to clarify that there have been no credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured or abused by individuals within the immigrant community,' he said on Tuesday.

The Canton PD footage continues with an officer turning to a group of onlookers after Ferrell is placed in the squad car.

'Did you guys see all this?' he inquires.

'No we pulled up and she was just laying there with..' one replies.

'Did you see her eating it?' he asks.

'Yeah,' says one, 'It was gross,' added another.

'She said with the blood on her shoes she stomped it out. She stomped the head out.'

'Well you don't kill a cat and go to the hospital, you go to jail,' the officer remarks.

Social media has been flooded with AI-generated images of Donald Trump protecting animals since his claims in the presidential debate on Tuesday

'Will you call the humane society and see if they will come pick this cat up,' he then mutters into his radio. 'It's deceased.'

Ferrell is being held in the Stark County Jail on a charge of cruelty to companion animals, a fifth-degree felony.

She graduated from Canton McKinley High School in 2015 and has a lengthy criminal history, with previous charges including cocaine possession, receiving stolen property and endangering children.

'The suspect in this case is not a Haitian immigrant,' Canton police spokesperson Dennis Garren said. 'She is a lifelong Canton resident.'

Her bond has been set at $100,000 and she is due to face a competency hearing in front of Stark County Common Pleas Judge Frank G. Forchione on October 15.

She has entered a plea of not guilty due to insanity.

'It just exploded': Springfield woman claims she never meant to spark false rumors about Haitians. The woman behind an early Facebook post that helped spark baseless rumors about Haitians eating pets told NBC News that she feels for the immigrant community.

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio — The woman behind an early Facebook post spreading a harmful and baseless claim about Haitian immigrants eating local pets that helped thrust a small Ohio city into the national spotlight says she had no firsthand knowledge of any such incident and is now filled with regret and fear as a result of the ensuing fallout.

“It just exploded into something I didn’t mean to happen,” Erika Lee, a Springfield resident, told NBC News on Friday.

Lee recently posted on Facebook about a neighbor’s cat that went missing, adding that the neighbor told Lee she thought the cat was the victim of an attack by her Haitian neighbors.

Newsguard, a media watchdog that monitors for misinformation online, found that Lee had been among the first people to publish a post to social media about the rumor, screenshots of which circulated online. The neighbor, Kimberly Newton, said she heard about the attack from a third party, NewsGuard reported.

Newton told Newsguard that Lee’s Facebook post misstated her story, and that the owner of the missing cat was “an acquaintance of a friend” rather than her daughter’s friend
. Newton could not be reached for comment.

Lee said she had no idea the post would become part of a rumor mill that would spiral into the national consciousness. She has since deleted the Facebook post.

Other posts have also contributed to the false allegations, including a photo of a man holding a dead goose that was taken in Columbus, Ohio, but was spread by some online as evidence of the claims about Springfield. Graphic video of a woman who allegedly killed and tried to eat a cat was also found not to have originated in Springfield but in Canton, Ohio, and does not have any connection to the Haitian community.

Local police and city officials have repeatedly said there is no evidence of such crimes in Springfield, but that hasn’t stopped the lies from spreading across the country and igniting a national frenzy that landed on the presidential debate stage this week. Former President Donald Trump and his running mate Ohio Sen. JD Vance, who was born less than an hour away from Springfield, have repeated the baseless allegations.

Lee said she never imagined her post would become fodder for conspiracy theories and hate.

“I’m not a racist,” she said through heavy emotion, adding that her daughter is half Black and she herself is mixed race and a member of the LGBTQ community. “Everybody seems to be turning it into that, and that was not my intent.”

The anti-immigrant fervor in Springfield led to school and municipal building closures on Thursday and Friday after city officials received bomb threats.

Lee said she pulled her daughter out of school and is now worried about her safety with so much attention on her family. She is also concerned for the safety of the Haitian community, which she said she did not intend to villainize en masse.

“I feel for the Haitian community,” she said. “If I was in the Haitians’ position, I’d be terrified, too, worried that somebody’s going to come after me because they think I’m hurting something that they love and that, again, that’s not what I was trying to do.”

Immigrant advocacy groups have said these kinds of claims can be dangerous.

“The Haitian-American community in Springfield, OH and around the country is feeling targeted and unsafe because dehumanizing, debunked and racist conspiracies are being advanced at the highest levels of American politics and are still being repeated,” Vanessa Cárdenas, executive director of America's Voice, a nonprofit that advocates for immigration reform said in an email. “The false claim that Black immigrants are violently attacking American families by stealing and eating their pets is a powerful and old racist trope that puts a target on people’s backs, and it is turbo-charged in the era of MAGA when political violence has become commonplace and we have already witnessed violent incidents incited by such rhetoric.”

Lee said that there are very real problems related to Springfield's population boom that caught the struggling city off guard. Springfield was not prepared to address the housing, health care and other service needs that came with the sudden increase of new residents over the last five years when Haitians arrived, many of them with protected status under federal law.

Still, she never imagined that her Facebook post would set off a national news cycle.

“I didn’t think it would ever get past Springfield," she said.

Springfield, Ohio Elementary Schools Evacuated, Colleges Go Remote as Threats Spiral

Trump Promises Mass Deportations Will Begin In Springfield And Aurora

A college in Springfield, Ohio, received threats of a shooting on Saturday. The following day, another email arrived with a bomb threat.

Both were toward members of the Haitian community, Wittenberg University said Monday, as unrest continued over debunked rumors that migrants were stealing and eating pets in the city.

"I worked with a group of people out in Springfield for the whole summer and not once did I have a problem, or did I run into someone who had an issue, with the Haitian community," Wittenberg junior Gabby Conaway told Newsweek Monday morning.

"All of the threats downtown and even on campus, it's almost surreal how quickly things have escalated. It's just really scary."

The college said in a statement Monday that the campus was closed, and classes would be held remotely, as the FBI and local law enforcement investigated the new threats.

Another nearby college, Clark State, also shifted to remote classes for the entire week.

Unrest spirals in Springfield

The threats come after similar emails were sent to Springfield officials Thursday and Friday, prompting the closures of City Hall, health care facilities, schools and the local courthouse. Two more elementary schools were evacuated Monday, the Springfield News-Sun reported, due to "information" received by the police.

The Springfield region continues to be hit by threats of violence that are affecting local schools and others.

The Springfield City School District evacuated both Simon Kenton and Kenwood Elementary schools Monday morning based on information received from the Springfield Police Division, according to school officials. They did not comment on specifics of the danger.

No other schools in the district had been affected Monday morning, but these are the fifth and sixth district buildings to be targeted by recent threats within the last week.

The district was in the process of a controlled release to dismiss students to their parents, and a long line of people were waiting at Springfield High School to pick up their children.

Thelma Cobb, who picked up her great-granddaughter at Simon Kenton, said she thinks this is “ridiculous” and “scary.”

“There’s always been discord with immigrants ... It’s just like, we have to stop. We just have to stop. It’s so discouraging and scary that we’re going backwards,” she said.

Cobb said she doesn’t understand the bomb threats, especially with targeting kids.

“I mean, why? They have enough to worry about then they go in the school and they have to do drills for shootings and everything. It’s so scary. (We) just need to come together. That’s all there is ... I just keep praying, that’s all you can do,” she said.

Kristen Karkan, who picked up her 5, 7, and 10-year-olds from Kenwood, said community leaders “have got to do something.”

“This is just ridiculous, it’s got to stop somewhere. I mean, the governments, the city officials, have got to do something about this. I’m pulling my kids out for the rest of the week at least, if not going homeschool for the rest of the year because this is just... it makes me scared to have my kids at school at all ... Something has got to give,” she said.

Last Friday, the district closed Roosevelt Middle School and evacuated Perrin Woods and Snowhill Elementary schools after the city received two bomb threats via email, according to a city release. Cliff Park High School, a charter school outside the Springfield district, was also evacuated.

"These are the fifth and sixth SCSD buildings to be targeted by recent threats within the last week," the district said in a statement announcing the early dismissals.

Elsewhere in the city of 60,000, an apartment building was gutted by fire over the weekend, which left around 20 people displaced and two people injured. The cause has not yet been determined.

Accusations that Haitian migrants were eating cats and dogs appeared to start with a single Facebook post, which the author has since distanced herself from in an interview with NBC News.

"It just exploded into something I didn't mean to happen," Erika Lee told the outlet. "I'm not a racist... Everybody seems to be turning it into that, and that was not my intent."

The rumor was picked up by Ohio Senator JD Vance, former President Donald Trump's running mate, who amplified the claims on social media.

Trump himself then started talking about migrants "eating the pets" during his debate with Vice President Kamala Harris last Tuesday, before repeating the line in speeches the rest of the week and promising to begin his mass-deportation plan in Springfield, along with Aurora, Colorado, where Venezuelan gang members were causing problems for locals.

The GOP candidates' claims appear to be the genesis of the unrest in the city which has seen an increase in its immigrant population in recent years. Before last week, there were no recent threats to businesses, schools or officials to speak of.

Many migrants in Springfield are Haitian and have been granted Temporary Protected Status by the Biden Administration. This means they are eligible for benefits and can work.

Students at Wittenberg, a small Lutheran-affiliated private university in the middle of town, are among those who have been thrown into the election-season maelstrom without warning.

Junior class president Taylor J. H. Harper told Newsweek Monday that it had been a scary week for he and his classmates.

"We took care of each other. We opened up our house for anyone that didn't feel safe on campus," Harper said.

"I feel like that happened all across campus and it was kind of nice to see the community that we shared together in in this hard time."

Ohio governor attempts to ease tensions

On Sunday, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine told ABC News that there was no evidence behind the claims made about Springfield's Haitian community.

"Let me tell you what we do know though. What we know is that the Haitians who are in Springfield are legal. They came to Springfield to work," DeWine said. "Ohio is on the move, and Springfield has really made a great resurgence, with a lot of companies coming in.

"What the companies tell us is that they are very good workers," the governor said of the Haitian migrants. "They're very happy to have them there. And frankly, that's helped the economy."

Sen. Vance, who counts Springfield residents among his constituents, was also questioned about his role in the unrest on Sunday by CNN's Dana Bash. After defending the way the story had played out, he said that he and Trump had to "create stories" about migrants "so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people".

Trump is reportedly planning to visit Springfield "soon," NBC reported on Sunday, before the second attempt on his life.

"I feel really bad for people who are caught in the crossfire of all these threats coming to Springfield," Conaway, the Wittenberg junior, said. "It feels like a lot of us around town are just getting stuck in, I don't want to say it's a political game, but it kind of unfortunately is."

The efforts to calm the unrest and debunk the claims have not appeared to ease safety concerns, with Wittenberg officials urging students and staff to remain vigilant.

"University administrators recognize that the city of Springfield has experienced an increase of threats to local government, businesses, and schools in the past week. We take these threats seriously and will provide updates to the campus as we learn more," the school wrote in a Monday note to campus.

Newsweek reached out to the FBI, Governor DeWine and Springfield officials for further comment Monday morning.

The city, meanwhile, has cancelled its annual CultureFest event later this month, citing ongoing safety concerns. The event was due to celebrate "diversity, arts and local culture".

"We deeply regret having to cancel CultureFest, as we know it is a beloved event for our community," Springfield City Manager Bryan Heck said in a statement on Facebook. "However, the safety of our residents and visitors must come first."

Conoway told Newsweek that before the claims about the migrant community in Springfield spread, her impression of the city was that it was safe and the Haitian migrants wanted to help the town succeed.

"I think everyone is just confused as to how big this has gotten, and we would have literally never expected to wake up yesterday and see our campus all over the news potentially under attack," the student said.

"I think everyone is just blindsided."

Troopers to patrol schools in Springfield, Ohio, after threats linked to false claims about Haitian immigrants
by Chelsea Bailey
CNN
Sep 16, 2024 Updated 3 hrs ago

(CNN) — Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine is deploying the Ohio State Highway Patrol to monitor schools in the city of Springfield after they received 33 bomb threats since late last week, he said at a news conference Monday.

Two colleges were moved to virtual learning and two elementary schools were evacuated Monday after receiving separate threats. The threats so far haven’t had “any validity at all,” DeWine said in a news conference Monday afternoon.

The threats and closures come amid ongoing fallout from baseless allegations former President Donald Trump made during the second presidential debate that Haitian immigrants in the city are stealing and eating local pets.

Students at Simon Kenton and Kenwood Elementary Schools were evacuated “to an alternate district location” Monday based on information district officials received from the city’s police, the Springfield City School District said in a release.

“These are the fifth and sixth SCSD buildings to be targeted by recent threats within the last week,” the district said.

DeWine said 36 troopers from the state patrol’s mobile field force will be present at all 17 school buildings in the Springfield City School District starting Tuesday. The troopers will sweep all school buildings before classes start and will remain on campus to provide security throughout the day and after dismissal, he said.

“We have people, unfortunately, overseas who are taking these actions,” DeWine said of those making the threats. “Some of them are coming from one particular country. We think this is one more opportunity to mess with the United States, and they’re continuing to do that. So we cannot let the bad guys win.”

DeWine declined to name the specific country he said some of the threats were coming from, but said the FBI is assisting local law enforcement. When asked why DeWine didn’t want to name the country, a spokesperson for his office said the governor “does not want to provide encouragement to the bad actors who have engaged in these numerous threats.”

Elsewhere in the city, classes at Wittenberg University were held remotely Monday while campus police and local law enforcement assessed emailed threats of a bombing and a campus shooting that targeted “members of the Haitian community,” the university said in a statement. The university has received five separate threats since Saturday, and most have been resolved, school president Michael Frandsen told CNN Monday. Law enforcement agencies have increased patrols on campus, he said.

Nearby Clark State College also announced its campuses will be closed this week and classes will be held virtually after the school also received similar threats through email. Officials at both schools said they were taking the measures “out of an abundance of caution.”

“We understand the anxiety that such incidents can cause and we are treating this matter with the utmost seriousness and care,” Clark State said in a statement. “We will always prioritize the safety and wellness of our students, employees and community. We appreciate your understanding during this challenging time.”

Springfield also announced Monday it will cancel is annual arts and cultural festival, scheduled to take place September 27 and 28, amid recent threats and safety concerns.

Rob Rue, the city’s mayor, told CNN’s Dana Bash that he and other officials have personally received threats, adding “it would be helpful” if politicians “understood the weight of their words and how they could harm a community like ours.”

Springfield police told CNN they received two 911 calls Saturday to report members of the Proud Boys – the paramilitary group that stormed the US Capitol on January 6 – marching through town.

“We had a couple calls of their presence in town, but when the officers went to the area, Lexington and South Burnett, they were no longer there,” Sgt. Geovanny Mercado told CNN.

Two area hospitals closed Thursday after receiving threats and the following day, two local elementary schools were evacuated “based on information received from the Springfield Police Division.”

In an interview with CNN on Monday, DeWine flatly denied the false rumors about the city’s Haitian immigrants and said business leaders feel Haitian immigrants are “really essential to them getting the job done.”

“These Haitians that are there are legal, they work very, very hard,” the governor said.

Approximately 12,000 to 15,000 immigrants live in Clark County, where Springfield is the county seat, the city notes on its website. It says Haitian immigrants are there legally as part of a parole program that allows citizens and lawful residents to apply to have their family members from Haiti come to the United States.

Officials with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office also debunked allegations that Haitians were stealing geese out of local parks last week, noting police have reviewed 11 months of 911 records and identified two instances of people reporting such incidents, but found no evidence to substantiate the claims.

Vice presidential candidate JD Vance was among the first to elevate the baseless rumors about Haitians. CNN’s Dana Bash asked the Ohio Republican to provide evidence supporting the allegations in an interview Sunday on “State of the Union,” and the senator cited multiple “firsthand” accounts he said he received from his constituents but provided no further evidence.

He also bristled at the idea that repeating the baseless claims has led to a spike in threats in the city. ”There is nothing that I have said that has led to threats against these hospitals. The violence is disgusting, and we condemn it,” Vance said.

“All that I’ve done is surface the complaints of my constituents, people who are suffering because of Kamala Harris’ policies. Are we not allowed to talk about these problems because some psychopaths are threatening violence?” he added.

Vance later said, “If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that’s what I’m going to do.”

When Bash pressed him to clarify whether he was admitting the story was fabricated, Vance reiterated the claims came from his constituents.

“I didn’t create 20,000 illegal migrants coming into Springfield thanks to Kamala Harris’ policies. Her policies did that,” he said. “But yes, we created the actual focus that allowed the American media to talk about this story and the suffering caused by Kamala Harris’ policies.”

Rue, the mayor, told CNN’s Erin Burnett on Thursday that his city has experienced a 25% growth in population in the past three years, in part because of the influx of Haitian immigrants.

Rue said he’s working with local law enforcement to address an increase in reckless driving and asked the governor for additional funding over the next two years to improve the language services in the local health care system, but he denounced claims that immigrants were harming local pets and animals.

“I just want to clearly say, as a pet lover, your pets are safe in Springfield, Ohio, and it’s odd that I even have to tell the national media, yes, it is, if that’s a fact, but it is a fact,” Rue said.

CNN’s Paradise Afshar, Chris Boyette, Kit Maher and Taylor Romine contributed to this report.
