North Korea has fired a barrage of short-range ballistic missiles towards the Sea of Japan, just hours after US President Donald Trump said he would meet North Korean leader Kim Jong Un later this year. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said approximately 10 short-range ballistic missiles were launched from the outskirts of Pyongyang. Japan also confirmed multiple ballistic missile launches, saying the projectiles travelled around 320 kilometres and reached a maximum altitude of approximately 90 kilometres before splashing down outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone. The missile launches came as the US and South Korea were conducting their annual Ulchi Freedom Shield military exercises — drills that Trump had ordered to be scaled back.
